A FUNDRAISING page set up in memory of a little girl who tragically died from meningitis after doctors misdiagnosed a rash as bruising has raised more than £12,000.

Six-year-old Layla Rose Ermenekli was rushed to Royal Oldham Hospital in February this year with a high temperature, headache and stomach ache – but after spending eight hours in hospital she went into cardiac arrest and sadly passed away.

The report into an investigation carried out by Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, released at the beginning of this month, revealed that medics failed to realise a rash on her hip was a sign of meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia.

Layla’s family set up the page on the website muchloved.com to raise money for the charity Meningitis Now in memory of their daughter, and it has already raised more than £12,400.

The dedication on the site reads: “This site is a tribute to Layla Rose Ermenekli, our gorgeous little princess taken far too soon, she will always be in our hearts and thoughts. Dance in the clouds.” Among those to have raised money for the fund are Darren Smith, who in April this year did a skydive that raised more than £1,600. Writing on the site he said: “Unfortunately, no amount of money can bring Layla back, but it can go a long way towards saving the lives of others. “As well as leaving a huge void behind that can never be filled, she has also left such a mark and raised so much awareness about meningitis that even though she had her own short life cruelly taken, her memory will never die and her legacy will be that she has gone on to play a massive part in saving the lives of others.” The report stated there were ‘missed opportunities to identify the severity’ of Layla Rose’s illness, and ther mother’s concerns were not listened to, despite her being assessed by a number of medics. A statement released by her mum, Kirsty, and dad Ramazan Ermenekli, said: “Layla Rose was a much loved, bright, beautiful daughter and sister. “She had many friends and loved to dance. The family hopes the tragic events giving rise to Layla Rose’s death will bring about patient safety at Royal Oldham.” To make a donation visit laylaroseermenekli.muchloved.com.
