Lukaku has his say on THAT fan chant
ROMELU Lukaku has called for United fans to ‘move on together’ amid the controversy over his new terrace chant.
Fans have created a song for the Belgian striker, which has been widely condemned as having racist connotations.
The 20-word chant, which is sung to the tune of the Stone Roses’ Made of Stone, was given its first airing in United’s 3-0 win against Basel last week. The second line hails Lukaku as ‘our Belgium scoring genius’ but the rest of the chant crudely makes reference to the 24-year-old’s manhood.
Kick It Out, football’s equality organisation, has urged United to ensure the matter is ‘addressed swiftly’.
Lukaku has now addressed the issue of the chant, saying: “Great backing since I joined United. Fans have meant well with their songs but let’s move on together. #RespectEachOther.”
United stewards were reportedly instructed to take action against supporters seen singing the chant against Burton Albion in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night.
A Kick It Out spokesman said: “Kick It Out is aware of footage of alleged racist chanting by supporters of Manchester United that emerged on Wednesday evening September 13 .
“The lyrics used in the chant are offensive and discriminatory. Racist stereotypes are never acceptable in football or wider society, irrespective off any intention to show support for a player.
“We have contacted Manchester United regarding the issue and will be working closely with them and the FA to ensure that it is addressed swiftly.”
