Police ban car event planned for tram stop

- By KATIE BUTLER

POLICE and transport bosses have cancelled a car event at a tram station this weekend.

The 2Rude2Cruise group had planned to meet at Hollinwood Metrolink stop in Oldham tomorrow for a ‘car show,’ but authorities have now blocked it.

GMP said gatherings ‘of this nature tend to attract anti-social behaviour issues’ and ‘will not be tolerated.’

The group, which has 13,000 members across the country, said the meeting was planned for friends to get together to talk about cars.

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) bosses said the group did not have permission to use the car park for the event as it is private property.

A spokesman said: “After being made aware of a proposed car-meet event this weekend, we contacted organisers to inform them they do not have permission to use Metrolink Park and Ride sites for any events.

“These car parks are private property for use by Metrolink customers only and we are working with Greater Manchester Police, through our Travelsafe Unit, to ensure they remain free from anti-social behaviour.”

Officers from GMP Failsworth and Hollinwood said they wouldn’t allow the event to go ahead.

A spokesman said: “Gatherings of this nature tend to attract anti-social behaviour issues and will not be tolerated by GMP.”

Officers said there were fears passengers may feel intimated by members of the group.

A spokesman for 2Rude2Cruise said: “It’s pathetic. We are all law-abiding citizens. A peaceful car show should be the last thing on their minds.

“We never cause hassle. We love to socialise and hang out with our friends. “What’s wrong with that? How can they ban friends meeting up?

“Police need to do better things than this.”

The group said the event may go ahead in a different location.
