Tokyo tops food destination list

-

A NEW guide showing travellers the best spots to find their favourite cuisines across the globe has been launched.

Travel site lastminute.com has analysed data across Trip Advisor and Michelin Stars** to create a ‘Taste of Travel’ foodie guide.

It looked at restaurants across thirty of the most popular cities, against more than fifty of the world’s best-loved cuisines to help travellers pick the right destination for them.

The guide lists the best places to find popular cuisines, beyond their country of origin.

Topping the list of ‘gastronomic meccas’ is Tokyo, which has 304 Michelin Stars, the highest number in the world and has more Chinese restaurants than Hong Kong.

It also wins on French food outside France, and has a whopping 2,647 Italian restaurants.

London is best for Asian food outside Asia, with more five star restaurants than Bangkok, Hong Kong and Singapore, and is top for Jamaican and Portuguese food outside their countries of origin.

New York meanwhile, has the most Greek, Israeli and Irish food.

Anyone who is hungry for Brazilian food but can’t fit in a trip there is advised to try London, Paris or New York.

Those looking to find Mexican food outside of Mexico meanwhile, should visit Los Angeles, New York and Las Vegas.

Reigo Eljas, country director at lastminute.com said: “We’re a world of food explorers looking to satisfy our taste buds by discovering brand new foods or finding even better versions of things we love. Food is such an important part of travel and the thing we remember long after returning home, which is why we want to help people get the best culinary experience from their next trip. Whatever you enjoy, from sushi to snails, pizza to poké, fine dining to hidden local gems, there’s sure to be a destination to whet your appetite.”

The site is also launching a new partnership with social eating website VizEat, that connects travellers and local hosts around authentic food experiences. This will mean customers booking certain hotels across Europe will get a £50 VizEat voucher to book themselves food experiences like dining in a local’s home, cooking classes, and food tours.
