Manager praises ‘brilliant’ Fane

- FOOTBALL By MATT CHAMBERS

ONE of the division’s big guns is aiming to halt the Richie Wellens bandwagon.

Oldham’s interim boss Wellens made it three wins in a row after seeing off Crewe in midweek, becoming the first Latics manager since Frank Womack in 1945 to achieve such a feat.

The club are not in action this weekend and the same is true of next opponents Blackburn Rovers, currently sixth in the table.

Oldham could make a decision on the identity of their next boss before the Rovers game but if that doesn’t happen, Wellens certainly has his work cut out to make it four straight victories.

Blackburn have recovered after an inconsistent start to the season to record six wins from their least eight matches.

And one player in particular Oldham will need to maintain his current excellent form is ex-Rovers midfielder Jack Byrne, who has been inspirational of late in terms of his attacking play.

However, Wellens was also keen to highlight the good work done in recent matches by defensive shield and unsung hero Ousmane Fane.

“I love Jack, but with English people, sometimes they concentrate on what a player can’t do,” added Wellens.

“Why not look at what they can do? We have got Ousmane Fane to complement him and there is a nice mix in midfield.

“I don’t think Ousmane has had three better games for the club. He’s been brilliant with his energy, personality and defensive responsibility.”
