Man dies as car ploughs into tree

A MAN has died and two others were left seriously injured after a car crashed into a tree.

The fatal collision happened on Stockport Road, Denton, at around 9.50pm on Saturday.

A black VW Golf with three people inside was being driven towards Denton when it hit a tree near to the Arden Arms pub.

One of the passengers, a 26-yearold man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver, a 24-year-old man, was taken to hospital with serious injuries. He has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving, police said.

A second passenger, 25, suffered serious leg injuries and remains in hospital in a stable condition.

An investigat­ion into the crash has been launched and police are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Sergeant Lee Westhead, from GMP’s Serious Collision Investigat­ion Unit, said: “An investigat­ion has commenced to establish the circumstan­ces of this tragic collision, and my thoughts are with the families of those involved.

“I would urge witnesses to the collision, anyone who saw the occupants of the VW Golf before the collision, or those with any informatio­n, to contact my team as soon as possible on 0161 856 4741.”
