Volunteers give boost to libraries
MANCHESTER residents have been showing just how much they care about libraries by giving up their time to volunteer at a variety of projects.
In the last year, Manchester libraries have benefited from 400 active volunteers who collectively have given an astounding 20,000 hours of their time.
Volunteers are involved in activities from blogging and digitising information to sharing their computer skills and promoting reading.
For anybody who would like to get involved there are plenty of opportunities – either on a regular basis or just at oneoff events. Volunteer opportunities are advertised on the council’s website and open to anyone over the age of thirteen.
It is not only a great way to give something back to the community but can be fun too, as Ian Dyer, who volunteers at Central Library, explained “It’s an excellent way of meeting people and keeping the brain cells active.”
The experience of another Central Library volunteer, Dave Alllinson, shows that volunteering can also provide valuable work experience.
He said: “Some of the volunteering work I’ve been involved with is office based - doing surveys and filling out forms. I’ve picked up a lot of organisational skills and it’s helped me with communication.
“I’ve also met some wonderful people and had some fantastic experiences. I’ve grown in confidence and my ability to communicate with people has improved.”
This week will see Manchester Council’s twitter feed focus on libraries, shining a light on all the exciting activities that potential volunteers could get involved in. Follow @ManCityCouncil on twitter to see what’s happening in your area.
Councillor Luthfur Rahman, Manchester City Council executive member for Culture, Leisure and Schools, said: “Manchester’s libraries are at the heart of the city’s cultural life. While books are still very important our libraries are about so much more – offering a window into local history, hosting a wide variety of events and providing access to computers.
“It’s phenomenal to see so many people get involved. Their experience demonstrates just how rewarding and important volunteering can be. “
