/California wildfire advice
TRAVELLERS planning to go to northern California are being advised to check their insurance as large wildfires sweep the region.
A state of emergency has been declared in Napa, Sonoma and Yuba.
With plumes of smoke visible over Disneyland, officials have now also issued air quality warnings for parts of the Los Angeles County.
With evacuation orders in place in several areas, travellers are being advised to check their travel insurance and read the policy wording carefully.
Fiona Macrae, from impartial insurance advisory firm Travel Insurance Explained, said: “The majority of standard policies will not include cover for force majeure, which offers protection against events or circumstances beyond your control such as wildfires, ash cloud, hurricanes, flood and earthquakes. It is also important to note that this cover would only be available if the policy was purchased before the wildfires had been announced.
“Travellers who have already reached their destination should be aware that, some policies will cover reasonable additional costs for alternative travel or accommodation, but only if you have cover for force majeure.
“We would advise everyone to check advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) before travelling.”
