Tributes to Giants legend Cadle

- BASKETBALL By ANTHONY JEPSON

MANCHESTER was just one of the stops on Kevin Cadle’s journey through British basketball.

The Buffalo native, who became one of the best-known and loved faces of the sport in the UK in the 1980s and 90s, has passed away aged 62.

He won numerous titles in his time as a BBL coach with Kingston, Glasgow, Guildford and London Towers.

And he led Manchester Giants in 1985/86 during their brief cross-city rivalry with Manchester United.

Giants stalwarts Jeff Jones and Mike Bernard have added Mancunian tributes to the many paid to Cadle, who went on to become a popular NFL broadcaster with Sky Sports.

Jones, who played for and coached the Giants, said: “He was a great coach and a great guy. I went up against him as a player and a coach and he was part of Manchester basketball at a very exciting time.

“He did a great job here and across the league - his coaching record was phenomenal - and he coached some of the best ever British talent.

“When we met up we’d reminisce about that time when there was some incredible basketball being played - and he was right at the heart of it.”

Bernard said: “The British basketball family has been hit hard be the sad news of the passing of coach Kevin Cadle. He will be missed and I want to send my deepest condolences to his family.

“Anyone who knows the history of British basketball knows the man to be one of the best coaches Great Britain ever had. RIP coach Kevin Cadle.”
