Four knife attacks in weekend of violence

POLICE are investigating four separate knife attacks in Burnage, the city centre, Gorton and Wigan this weekend.

An investigation is underway after a 30-year-old was taken to hospital from Arbor Avenue, in Burnage, with a number of stab wounds.

His condition in hospital was described by police as stable and officers said they believe the attack at around 12.10am yesterday was an ‘isolated incident.’

Det Insp Mark Davis said: “Knives destroy lives and they are not welcome on our streets.”

Officers called to Dorlan Avenue, in Gorton, at 7.30pm on Saturday night established three shots had been fired at a white Range Rover Sport parked on a driveway outside a house.

A family was thought to have been inside the house at the time.

Det Sgt Tim Greenwood said: “Luckily no one was injured in this incident, but when guns are used, particularly on suburban streets, there are always terrifying consequences.”

Earlier yesterday, two men were taken to hospital after reports of a stabbing incident in Spinningfields.

Police said an area on The Avenue North was sealed off for investigations.

Initial reports to police gave the location as outside Manchester House restaurant, but it’s believed to have happened further along the alleyway linking Bridge Street with Wood Street, near Neighbourhood restaurant and bar.

GMP described their injuries as not life-threatening. The ages and identities of those involved have not yet been revealed.

In another incident, a gunman is being hunted by police after three shots were fired at a car.

Shortly before 4pm on Saturday, police were called after two men had been stabbed in an alley between Buchanan Road and Plane Avenue in Wigan.

Officers and Paramedics went to a nearby address where two men, aged 30 and 38, had taken refuge.

The men were treated for serious but not life-threatening injuries in hospital.

Little is known about the circumstances around the stabbing, so police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the attack, or saw anyone in the area acting suspiciously, to get in touch.

Insp Tanya Kitchen, from GMP’s Wigan borough, said: “Thankfully both these men will recover from their injuries, but we could have easily been dealing with a much more tragic situation.

“We are determined to find whoever is responsible for this attack. They are obviously dangerous and are willing to use weapons on our streets in the middle of the afternoon.

“Hopefully members of the public might have seen something that can help our investigation. I would ask those people to get in touch with us and tell us what you know.”
