TWO teenage girls were taken to hospital after a violent incident broke out at Tameside College.

Police were called to reports of fighting at the campus in Ashtonunder-Lyne just before 10am yesterday.

It is understood that the college, on Beaufort Road, was placed on lockdown as a precaution.

Students at the college were locked inside classrooms for a short period of time while police were at the scene.

Two girls, both believed to be aged 17, were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Video clips from the scene showed GMP’s Tactical Aid Unit (TAU) and other police cars parked outside the college.

The sister of one of the injured girls claimed her head had been ‘stamped’ on and said she was ‘in pain’ following the incident. She said: “My sister, she can’t sit up.

“Her eyes are at the back of her head. She is in pain and can’t stop shaking. “She is in a bad way.” Tameside College declined to comment about claims that people who were not students were able to access the college grounds.

A statement posted on the Tameside College website said: “An isolated incident has occurred which has been effectively dealt with this morning in partnership with the police.

“We can confirm all students are safe and the college remains open with business as usual.”

A member of the college’s senior leadership team told the M.E.N.: “The college is committed to the safety of all our students so can confirm that this isolated incident is being dealt with.

“It is College Policy not to discuss or share any detail about any students.”

GMP confirmed there have been no arrests. A police spokesman said: “At around 10am police were called to a college on Beaufort Road to reports of a fight.

“Officers attended and found two teenage girls with minor injuries. They were taken to hospital for treatment. Enquiries into the circumstances are ongoing.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call GMP on 101 quoting incident number 557/ October 24.
