JESSE JOY! Double sends reds through

-

JOSE Mourinho was pleased with Axel Tuanzebe’s and Scott McTominay’s performances as United beat Swansea in the Carabao Cup fourth round.

Tuanzebe, 19, and 20-year-old McTominay made their first starts of the campaign at the Liberty Stadium, where two goals from Jesse Lingard (left) sent United through to the quarter-finals.

Rochdale-raised Tuanzebe started in his preferred central defensive role for the first time in the senior side and began the move which led to Lingard’s second, while McTominay also played the full 90 minutes.

Mourinho felt the two academy graduates were buoyed by the stability provided by United’s captain Chris Smalling and goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

“I think they did both well,” Mourinho said. “I would say Scott probably very well because he was really comfortable and strong in midfield.

“Axel I think started a little bit shaky, but then he got stability and he had also a good performance. The kids’ good performances were also a consequence of a good team performance. We were solid, we were compact, we were in control.

“They [Swansea] have a good squad with lots of options, there is no big difference the players, but we were really comfortable, the attitude was very good, Romero and Smalling gave us big stability, I am really happy, it was quite comfortable, no injuries, so good day for us.

“Since the first minute we felt we were in the game.”
