What’s that on roof of Kendals?
TENTACLES RISE OUT OF FAMOUS STORE AS STAFF GET READY FOR THE WEEKEND’S HALLOWEEN IN THE CITY FESTIVAL
A MONSTROUS sight confronted shoppers in Manchester city centre as giant green tentacles crept out from a Deansgate rooftop.
Stretching up to 10m in length, the tendrils could be seen snaking out from House of Fraser - or Kendals as it’s still known to many Mancunians.
The bizarre sight bewildered the crowds who gathered to watch at lunchtime yesterday.
Posting a picture on Twitter, Becky Cullen wrote: “Any reason why there is a large octopus on a roof in Manchester?” Joe Williams also tweeted: “What’s going on here???” The end was not nigh - the tentacles are the work of Bristolbased street artist Filthy Luker, who has made a name for himself with his mischievous inflatable ‘art attacks’ in cities around the world.
This one, Monster Attack, is in Manchester until Sunday as part of the Halloween In The City festival.
The city-wide spookfest, organised by Manchester BID, will also see landmarks including Manchester Town Hall, House of Fraser, Harvey Nichols, Selfridges and The Printworks lit up a ghastly green from tonight ahead of the main ‘Halloweekend’ of events on Saturday and Sunday.
Highlights include an spooky outdoor cinema in Exchange Square, showing family-friendly films on Saturday and the Creepy Carnival, a Day Of The Dead-style musical parade of giant skeletons, howling wolves and wicked witches that will be making its way through Market Street on Saturday and Sunday.
There’ll also be a fancy dress dog parade through the city on Saturday, with prizes for the best canine costumes.
A haunted maze will also be popping up in St Ann’s Square over the weekend while the Printworks will be hosting an evil scientist’s laboratory and a terrifying morgue.
Family-friendly rave organisers Big Fish Little Fish will also be throwing a spooky science party at city centre venue The Birdcage, bringing together some of the best DJs from across the city alongside stalls exploring the science of Halloween.
