Supporters want playmaker signing

UNITED fans are convinced that Jose Mourinho must strengthen his squad in the January transfer window.

The winter window has historically been quiet at Old Trafford and in his first season at the club Mourinho made no new signings – although he did sell Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay.

But United supporters believe things need to change this time around and they believe a playmaker would enhance their chances of success.

Eighty-five per cent of United fans polled by the M.E.N. believe that a signing has to be made, with United eight points behind leaders City in the Premier League. And recent performances – when United have scored one goal and earned one point in three away games against Liverpool, Huddersfield Town and Chelsea – have reinforced the view that an injection of creativity is essential once the window opens.

The injury to Paul Pogba, who has missed two months with a hamstring problem, has stunted United’s attack.

And 40pc of respondents believe a playmaker should be prioritised as a result.

Left-back also remains a concern, with Luke Shaw the only specialist at the position and unable to force his way into the squad. A quarter of poll respondents believe a full-back should be top of Mourinho’s transfer wish list as a result, while a further 14pc would like to see a winger arrive in January.
