PAUL Pogba has moved closer to a return against Newcastle after stepping up his recovery this week.
The midfielder could be in contention for United’s first game back after the international break – against Rafa Benitez’ side on November 18.
Pogba has taken part in training at Carrington, with Jose Mourinho increasingly encouraged by his recovery from hamstring injury.
The 24-year-old is one of a handful of players who have stayed behind in Manchester, while the majority of Mourinho’s squad are on international duty. Michael Carrick and Marcos Rojo – who are also recovering from injury – have been joined by reserve and youth players to make up numbers in training.
Mourinho is hopeful Pogba will be able to make an immediate return and be in contention for his squad against Newcastle.
The £89m man’s absence has been keenly felt as United have slipped eight points behind Premier League leaders City.
The fact he is training as part of a group is hugely encouraging after two months out.
With Zlatan Ibrahimovic also expected to return from knee ligament damage before Christmas, Mourinho’s injury concerns are beginning to clear.
“We have the group of players which are the ones that we hope will recover as soon as possible,” he told MUTV following Sunday’s defeat to Chelsea.
“They have to work every day, but they are in a good position now. Pogba, Ibra, Rojo, Fellaini.
“They are in good positions so I think we can go into this part of the season, the Christmas period, and after, in a strong position.”
