SO private lounge The Daisy is to open in the Northern Quarter and vet members according to their social media accounts.

This is just another example of the social divide that plagues our country nowadays.

As if we needed further proof that we are a society of haves and havenots, the owners are seeking to decide who can be a member based on what they say on Instagam.

Well, that way they can be assured of only meeting people who hold the same views as themselves.

Isn’t that the problem with all these so-called ‘creative’ types in the Northern Quarter?

Are they frightened to actually have to engage with someone who doesn’t share the same views or come from the same background?

What are they looking for? How will they choose who is suitable to be a member?

It seems like this is more of the same snobbery and insular behaviour that forms the social divide in this country.

Perhaps they are worried that an ‘ordinary’ working-class person might sneak in and start eating chips and drinking lager instead of red wine.

I am astonished that people think it is acceptable to pass judgement on each other in this fashion. Surely this is not what social media was created for?

The next thing you’ll be telling me is that they’ve banned swearing within earshot of the BBC. Oh, hang on... The Voice of Reason IT will be a fond farewell from many to the Ducie Bridge Pub on Corporation and Miller Street in Manchester.

As a former employee of the Co-operative Wholesale Society, working in the Central Catering Depot at the New Century House many years ago, the pub was only a stone’s throw from there and no doubt also a watering hole for many hundreds of present CWS staff – being an after-work venue to relax and put the world to rights.

This landmark pub, dating back to 1892 and presently owned by Joseph Holt brewery, will be demolished despite a petition.

By the way, my first net weekly wage at the CWS was £4, 4 shillings and 4p – and you could enjoy a few pints with change from that for all other expenses. Many happy memories. John Botomley, Clayton

I BELIEVE the pub Ducie Bridge pub really is to be pulled down.

Manchester has lost it identity. The council has almost pulled down most of the city.

I was horrified when the Odeon cinema on Oxford Road was bulldozed.

Manchester is looking like a virtual word – we’re all starting to look robotic. Jennifer Jamieson annual drive to both highlight and alleviate this issue by encouraging our houses and homes in Manchester to open their doors and offer free festive activities, hot meals and friendship.

So if you, or a friend or relative, might be alone this Christmas we would be absolutely delighted to welcome you in across the Advent period to spend time with residents, meet the staff and get involved in the events and activities taking place.

We’re always looking for volunteers to help spread the festive cheer too.
