Person who shouted ‘jump’ could have committed crime

-

POLICE have warned an onlooker who urged a vulnerable woman to jump from the multi-storey car park at the Arndale Centre in the city centre that they could have been committing a crime.

The woman was encouraged to leap from the roof of the car park, during the two hour incident on Thursday night.

Thankfully she was brought to safety at about 12.30am on Friday and taken to hospital for support and assessment.

But police have warned that the person who shouted ‘jump’ during the incident could potentially have been committing a crime.

City centre inspector Phil Spurgeon said: “Thankfully, behaviour like this from the public is extremely rare.

“The overwhelming majority are understanding of the measures we have to put in place to deal with an incident like this safely.

“Someone shouting ‘jump’ in that situation could potentially be committing a public order offence.

“If we had caught up with them they probably would have been given a warning.”
