Shakers settle for point against Gills

- FOOTBALL BY SHELDAN KEAY

BURY had to settle for a point as they were held to a 1-1 draw against fellow League One strugglers Gillingham at the Priestfield Stadium.

It looked like the Shakers were heading for a victory thanks to an opener from Neil Danns just before half-time, but Gillingham had other ideas as they found an equaliser through Josh Parker on 85 minutes to ensure that they took a point from the game.

Gillingham were lively in the opening stages of the match, with Sean Clare having the best opportunity for the hosts.

They couldn’t make the chances count though and Bury made them pay on 39 minutes when Danns fired into the back of the net from 15 yards out after good work from Eoghan O’Connell.

The visitors nearly doubled their lead in first half stoppage time, as Michael Smith volleyed an attempt wide after getting on the end of a good cross from Greg Leigh.

Andrew Tutte thought he had secured the points for Bury 13 minutes from time, but his long-range effort smashed off the post.

It proved to be a costly miss, as Gillingham levelled things up when Parker headed home to ensure the final score was 1-1.

It means that Bury remain unbeaten under caretaker boss Ryan Lowe, but it didn’t stop them dropping to the bottom of the League One table.

Gillingham are two points above them in 21st place.

Up next for Bury is an FA Cup first round replay at home to Woking tomorrow.
