Shrew won’t believe what Bury have done

- FOOTBALL ROUND-UP By SHELDAN KEAY

BURY picked up their biggest win of the season so far after a shock 1-0 victory at home to League One leaders Shrewsbury.

Greg Leigh got the only goal of the game for the Shakers to hand them all three points at the JD Stadium.

Shrewsbury had a golden chance to take the lead just before half-time when they were awarded a penalty after a foul by Leonardo Fasan in the box. The visitors couldn’t take advantage though, as Shaun Whalley’s effort hit the post.

Bury made them pay for their missed opportunity when they made the breakthrough on 56 minutes, with Leigh slotting home from close range after good work by Michael Smith.

That goal was enough, with Bury earning the 1-0 victory, and while they may remain bottom of the table, they are now just three points away from safety.

OLDHAM had to settle for a point as they were held to a goalless draw at home to AFC Wimbledon.

Latics thought they had taken the lead in the first half when Gevaro Nepomuceno’s powerful effort was palmed into the path of Craig Davies, who put the ball in the net, but the linesman ruled it out for offside and it was disallowed.

Both teams had chances throughout the rest of the game but in the end they had to settle for a point apiece, leaving them 16th in the table. ROCHDALE suffered a defeat away from home as they lost 2-1 against Charlton Athletic at the Valley.

It was a good start by Dale, as Matthew Gilliam gave the away side the lead after just 13 minutes.

Charlton levelled things up though shortly after the half hour mark, with Jake Forster-Caskey getting the equaliser.

Forster-Caskey proved to be the difference as he then got the winner on the hour mark to condemn Dale to defeat, with Keith Hill’s side remaining third from bottom, two points from safety.

WIGAN ATHLETIC are now just one point behind league leaders Shrewsbury after a dominant 3-0 win at home to Doncaster Rovers.

The hosts scored twice just before the interval, with the first goal coming courtesy of a Joe Wright own goal before Ryan Colclough made it 2-0 in first-half stoppage time.

Colclough then got another in the second half, helping his team come out on top and stay in second place.

In the Championship, BOLTON WANDERERS threw away a 2-0 lead as they drew 2-2 at home to Reading.

The Trotters were on course for a win that would have moved them out of the relegation zone after goals from Reece Burke and Darren Pratley, but Liam Moore and a late Leandro Bacuna penalty rescued Reading a point, meaning Bolton stay 23rd.
