- By KATHERINE BAINBRIDGE

PARENTS and pupils are being warned to be on their guard following reports of a man approaching children outside a school in Altrincham.

North Cestrian School on Dunham Road has put out a notice stating they ‘have had several reports of a man in his 30s approaching pupils in the vicinity of the school at the start and end of the school day.’

The reports were made on Thursday of last week and headteacher Lee Bergin said they called the police straight away.

He said: “The police sent officers round to speak to the pupils and take more details.

“We are just being vigilant and cautious because the safety of the pupils is paramount, but at the same time we don’t want to scare people or prevent pupils from living their lives as usual.

“We have staff at the gates at the start and the end of the day making sure pupils leave and enter the site safely.

“There have been no reports of anyone entering the site, but the reports have come from the vicinity of the school.”

The notice put out to parents reads: “As usual with these worrying incidents, it is about getting balance between sensible caution and undue fear. “Please advise your children: Not to approach the man or engage with him Stay with friends Report the matter to staff and parents – parents should also report the matter direct to 101 and share that with the school Offer reassurance “Staff are at the school gate at the start and end of the day.”

The notice was also circulated to parents at Loreto Grammar School, which is next door to North Cestrian.
