A BABY girl was spat on by a yob on a tram and will have to undergo blood tests for diseases.

Greater Manchester Police have launched an investigation after the incident involving the nine-month-old tot in Wythenshawe.

The child’s mother said she was left ‘fuming and upset’ by what happened on a Metrolink tram near the Martinscroft stop.

It is being treated as an assault by spitting, a GMP spokesman confirmed.

The baby was in her pram and was with her mother at the time.

Writing on Facebook, the girl’s mother said they got on a tram at the Benchill stop at around 5.15pm on Thursday and found three teenage boys ‘looking for trouble’ were already on board.

The girl’s mother said the teenagers got up to walk off as the tram reached Martinscroft.

Then, as the tram’s doors were closing shut, one of them stepped back inside and spat, covering her baby and a man standing next to her, she said.

“As the tram doors were beeping to close, one of the lads stepped back on and spat,” the woman wrote on Facebook.

“It went all over my nine-month-old daughter and all over the man stood next to my pram. “I am fuming and so upset. “My innocent little nine-month-old baby girl now has to go through numerous checks and bloods to make sure she’s not got anything.”

The boy involved reportedly ran off afterwards. Police confirmed CCTV footage was being studied in an effort to identify and track down the culprit.

The force spokesman said it’s believed a security guard on board was the target – and appealed for witnesses, or anyone with information, to come forward to assist the ongoing investigation.

No descriptions of those involved have been released by police.

A spokesman for GMP confirmed: “We were called at 5.30pm to reports of an assault by spitting.

“It had occurred at the Metrolink stop.

“A male offender had walked on to the tram and tried to spit at a security guard, but hit the baby instead.

“CCTV enquiries are ongoing and we would urge anyone with information to contact police on 101.”
