AN HEROIC nursery worker was hit by a car after pushing toddlers to safety on a pedestrian crossing.

Emergency services were called to Liverpool Road in Cadishead to reports of a collision involving a woman and a number of children.

It is understood the woman had been crossing the road with three youngsters from JitterBugz Day Nursery when the car came towards them.

In an incredible act of bravery, she pushed the toddlers out of harm’s way before ‘taking the brunt of the car herself.’

The 59-year-old suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital by ambulance. She was later discharged to recover at home.

Some of the children suffered cuts and bruises and were checked over by paramedics at the scene but did not need to go to hospital.

A statement issued by the nursery on its Facebook page said the worker and colleagues had been on their way back from a walk with their overtwos children when the collision occurred at around 2.45pm on Tuesday afternoon on the crossing close to the nursery.

The statement added: “A member of staff and three children were caught up in the collision – although the member of staff very heroically pushed the children out of the way and took the brunt of the car herself. She has now been taken to hospital.

“The three children were assessed by paramedics who immediately attended the scene.

“They are THANK GOODNESS all well. This has been an awful afternoon.

“I must commend my outstanding staff team for the way they handled this horrific event.”

A spokesman for the North West Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 2.49pm on Tuesday to reports of a collision.

“A 59-year-old woman was taken to Salford Royal Hospital with minor injuries.

“Three children were also treated at the scene for minor injuries.”

GMP also confirmed they were called just after 3pm. The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and the incident was logged as a minor injury road traffic collision. Anyone with information on the incident should contact police on 101, quoting the log number 1187 of November 28.
