Mum’s pride over fire hero Callum

A MUM has spoken of her pride for her young son after he raised the alarm about a pub blaze in Salford.

Renee Fernandes and seven-year-old Callum were walking home from school when the youngster spotted sparks coming from a window in the building.

He turned to his mum and shouted ‘look mummy sparks’ as flames began to spread through the derelict Brown Cow pub on Worsley Road, Eccles.

Realising she’d left her phone at home, Renee knocked on the window of a nearby taxi, asking for his phone. She then quickly dialled 999. Fire engines raced to the scene and arrived in less than six minutes after the call.

Smoke quickly filled the street as the fire ripped through the pub.

The road was closed off to traffic as firefighters battled the blaze, which consumed two floors of the building.

Now Renee has praised the quick-thinking actions of her hero son, who was instrumental in getting help.

She said Callum was praised by a firefighter for his actions. He shook the young boy’s hand and called him a star, she said.

Speaking after the fire she said: “I’m extremely proud of Callum, he’s very sharp. He’s a bright boy. It’s incredible for a child to be so vigilant.

“Callum saved the day. He noticed the fire first and pointed out the sparks coming from the building.

“When he told me, I realised I had left my phone at home, and knocked on the window of a taxi.

“The driver was kind enough to lend me his phone. I called 999 and two fire engines came.”

Worsley Road was closed for several hours after the fire broke out at about 4pm last Wednesday.

Crews tackled the fire overnight and remained at the scene until 11am the following morning.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, fire bosses say.

A statement on the Manchester Fire website said: “The fire involved two storeys of the building, plus the basement.”
