Thanks to ‘star’ who helped me when I fell

LAST Saturday I was careless enough to fall flat on my face in the Market Place in Thirsk, North Yorkshire.

Immediately a young man rushed and took complete care of me, checking the damage to my face and asking me relevant questions about other injuries I might have, and even checked my pulse.

He then asked his partner to ring for an ambulance.

I asked him where he was from and he said he lives in Reddish, which is only ‘up the road’ from Heaton Moor where I lived for years.

Sadly, I never asked his name but I just hope he reads this letter so that I can thank him for being so kind and caring, and to let him know I’m fine – no broken bones but sporting a very bruised face and ten stitches.

You were a star, and I’m very grateful to you. Mo Penson, Thirsk North Yorks

Well played bowls club

CONGRATULATIONS to Debdale Park crown green bowls club in Gorton for raising funds to buy a defibrillator for all to use in the park.

Geoff Carter and his bowls committee went out of their way to raise funds with help from a grant as well.

A group of older friends now have peace of mind that if anyone does have a heart problem they are there to help.

Plus, six of the bowlers have already taken a course of how to use the machine.

Last week Coun Julie Reid, a Gorton representative, launched and unveiled the machine.

Well done to all concerned. Allan Grafton Chairman, Gorton events

Homeless need address

THE police want to stop homeless people begging.

The mayor is very seriously concerned.

There is a solution to this problem, from my own personal experience as a homeless person, thanks to GMP.

To start with, the homeless people should be given a temporary postal address, in order to get state benefits that they are entitled to.

This will stop the begging (I used to use the general post office restante, as a temporary address).

The town halls should provide a temporary postal address to the homeless and also provide a welfare unit to advise them as to what they are entitled to.

This will enable them to live in lodgings or hostels and try and seek employment.

The mayor should also encourage the establishment of industrial cooperatives and use disused homes to be renovated to make them habitable.

Manchester can set a good example for the rest of the country if they wish, instead of just talking about the homeless.

We give more than £13billion in foreign aid, yet our homeless have to beg or sell their bodies in order to buy food. Is that right in the UK in the 21st century? Mr Jal Framji, Wilmslow

LGBT flats are mistake

I THINK the decision to build 14 flats in Salford solely for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents is a big mistake.

It would isolate these people from the community and make the whole building a target for bigots and criminals. Surely it is better to be part of the wider population of Salford and be accepted for who the are. P Meakin, Salford

C02 debate is pointless

ARGUMENTS about CO2 levels in the atmosphere are completely pointless because really nobody is listening. So long as animals and people continue to breathe and so long as humans demand greater economic growth, greenhouse gases will increase. We demand more land and air travel, factory farmed food, heating, lighting and industrial production. Even if the human production of carbon dioxide were stable production of carbon dioxide would never cease to increase. If rising global temperatures doesn’t kill off the human race, then constant fighting over increasingly scarce natural resources will do so. J M Johnson, Stockport
