POLICE were pelted with stones - and one officer hit in the eye with a drinks can - as 50 yobs gathered to watch teenage girls fight.

The two schoolgirls arranged to meet in Limeside in Oldham on Tuesday night, with huge numbers of teens taking to the streets to watch.

Residents near to Limeside Road contacted police after seeing youths gathering near their homes.

GMP said 10 officers attended and attempted to disperse the group before being subjected to a tirade of vile abuse.

GMP’s Sergeant Paul Archer said the culprits were being sought.

He said: “Officers had seen the gathering of 14 and 15-yearolds and concerned residents also called to inform us.

“There were around 50 juveniles on Limeside Road at around 7.30pm on Tuesday night.

“Two girls from a nearby school had arranged to fight.

“A police van and three police cars arrived to disperse the group.”

Sgt Archer said one of the girls did not turn up, so the group went to look for her. He added: “A lot of the group were in school uniform. “We dispersed the group, but while doing so, some of the group threw stones and a can hit an officer in the eye.” “Parents have a responsibility to know where their children are and what they are up to.” Details of the incident were shared on the Failsworth and Hollinwood Facebook page, with many posting comments expressing their shock at the youngsters’ behaviour. One person wrote: “Disgusting. The police should not have to deal with this kind of behaviour.” Another wrote: “Kids don’t have respect for themselves never mind the police, ambulance or fire service. “They need a good harsh lesson.” Another wrote: “What do the parents actually think their children are doing, or is it out of sight out of mind? “More parents seem to lack parental guidance and have no idea what is right or wrong. “We seen to have a generation of rude, disrespectful youths. “Parents wake up before it’s too late.” One youth was arrested and charged with a public order offence.
