Thieves target a charity shop
CALLOUS thieves who burgled a city centre Oxfam shop stole cash from the tills and a collection box.
The incident, on Monday night, forced the closure of the Oxfam Emporium Shop on the Northern Quarter’s busy Oldham Street the following day during the crucial run-up to Christmas for shoppers.
It also took vital funds from those around the globe who are living in poverty.
Jo Fells, manager of the Oxfam Emporium Shop on Oldham Street, said: “It was a real shock to discover what happened.
“The thieves stole our takings from the previous day as well as a collection box.
“Our volunteers have been working hard in what is a very busy time for us in the run up to Christmas.
“The money stolen could have been used to provide clean water, food and shelter for people around the world who need it most.”
She reminded shoppers they have now reopened, adding: “We are very grateful to our customers, donors and volunteers in Manchester who have been so supportive.
“Together we are determined to help make a difference to people’s lives”.
The break-in is thought to have taken place at around 10pm on Monday.
The shop manager discovered what had happened only when she opened the shop the following morning.
It then stayed close during the morning while police investigated, before reopening at 2pm.
A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said the burglary had been reported by a neighbour at around 12.50am on Tuesday.
It is not known how the offenders broke in.
