Medical equipment was ‘ruined’

-

A GRANDFATHER who says his vital medical equipment was ruined by a Manchester Airport security scanner is warning others to get the right paperwork in place before they travel.

Phillip Hill, 51, who has radiation poisoning from cancer treatment, needs to inject himself with growth hormone every day using a special machine.

But when he and wife Alison, 49, travelled to Fuerteventura through Manchester Airport, they say the £500 machine which they took as hand luggage - was scanned, wiped of its data and rendered unusable. They also claim the security staff member was rude to them and rough with the equipment.

The couple say this meant Phillip was forced to go without his daily injection throughout the two-week break - causing his symptoms to worsen.

He also missed out for a week on his return while they waited for a replacement machine.

Although Philip had a letter to pass to security staff explaining what the equipment was, it did not say it should not be scanned.

Manchester Airport have since apologised to the Hills.

Alison, a former school lunchtime supervisor, said: “We are due to fly again from Manchester Airport in January. Lloyds Pharmacy are issuing us a new letter clearly stating the machine should not be scanned but last time the airport staff didn’t even read the letter we gave them. We just hope this time we are treated better.”
