Quigg shapes up for Valdez scrap

- By SHELDAN KEAY

BURY boxer Scott Quigg is on the verge of securing a fight to challenge WBO world featherweight champion Oscar Valdez.

The fight between Quigg and Valdez is said to be ‘very close’ to being finalised, and would take place at the StubHub Center in California on March 10.

The bout would give Quigg the chance to become a two-weight world champion, having previously held the WBA super-bantamweight title from 2013 to 2016.

Quigg’s promoter, Eddie Hearn, said: “We are close to finalising a deal for Scott Quigg to face Oscar Valdez for the world title.

“Hopefully we will get it over the line, it will be an unbelievable fight.”

Valdez is unbeaten in his professional career, having won all 23 of his fights – with 19 of those wins coming by knockout.

He won the WBO belt back in July 2016 with a second-round stoppage win against Matias Carlos Adrian Rueda at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Since then, he has gone on to successfully defend it on three occasions against Genesis Servania, Miguel Marriaga and Hiroshige Osawa.

Valdez also holds stoppage wins over Chris Avalos and Evgency Gradovich, who have shared the ring with fellow British fighters Carl Frampton and Lee Selby respectively.

Quigg’s last win came in November when he defeated Oleg Yefimovych in the sixth round.
