Quigg already knows how to win an Oscar!

- BOXING EXCLUSIVE By SHELDAN KEAY

SCOTT Quigg has lifted the lid on previous sparring sessions with WBO featherweight champion Oscar Valdez - and believes he has found chinks in his armour ahead of their potential fight.

The Bury boxer is on the verge of securing a fight with Valdez, with the two men expected to clash at the StubHub Center in California on March 10.

The pair previously sparred last year, and Quigg says the fans will be in for a treat if their bout is anything similar.

“It should be a great fight. We shared the ring and had some sparring last year when I was preparing for Viorel Simion, and if those four or five spars are anything to go by then the fans are in for a real cracker,” Quigg told M.E.N. Sport. “The reason I came out to Los Angeles to work with Freddie Roach was for that sort of sparring, and that showed me I made the correct decision.

“I know what he can do. I know his attributes and his weaknesses, but he can say the same for me.

“It’s a voluntary defence so they’ve decided to pick me for a reason, but I’m very confident of winning.

“It’s a fight that really excites me. He brings dangers and he’s probably hitting his peak at the moment.

“Hopefully it will be finalised soon. If everything that has been discussed and has been agreed is then put into the contract, then it’s on.

“Out of the champions out there, nobody really talks about Valdez, but I think there are chinks in his armour.

“I mentioned to my promoter Eddie Hearn six months ago that I’d love to fight him.

“It’s a massive opportunity and becoming a two-weight world champion would probably be the biggest achievement of my career.”

With the fight taking place in California, Quigg won’t have to travel far from his training base at the Wildcard Gym in Los Angeles, and he’s relishing the chance to fight in America for the first time.

“I’ve always wanted to fight in America and the StubHub Center is a great venue,” he said.

“It would be on primetime on ESPN too so it will be a real highlight.

“Fighting there takes a bit of the stress away from flying home. Since I’ve been over there I’ve come back and fought at Wembley and then in Monte Carlo,” he added. “I fly out to America next week and I’ll have a good eight-and-a-half weeks out there, so it will be a solid camp. Since my last fight I’ve been in the gym every day apart from a week anyway. I’m keeping fit and in a really good place already.”
