Former City youth player goes on trial accused of rape

-

A FORMER City youth star has gone on trial accused of raping a woman following a night out.

George Glendon, 22, is alleged to have raped the woman after the pair met in a nightclub in the seaside resort of Cleethorpes in Lincolnshire.

Two days before his trial started at Grimsby Crown Court, Mr Glendon, who now plays for League One club Fleetwood Town, faced Leicester City in the FA Cup.

Mr Glendon wore a dark suit, white shirt and blue tie when he appeared in the dock for the hearing yesterday.

The opening to the trial heard the woman had been drinking heavily on the night of the alleged incident and Mr Glendon had helped her into a taxi before being driven to a friend’s house.

Mr Glendon, of Heald Green, Cheadle, Stockport, denies he then raped the woman after the night out in February 2016.

The court heard the woman could recall little about the alleged incident, except for being in a bedroom with a man she did not recognise and being kissed and touched intimately.

Michael Morley, prosecuting, said in police interviews Mr Glendon claimed that the woman indicated that she did want to have sex and had initiated the encounter.

But Mr Morley claimed, because of her condition and the amount she had drunk, the woman was not in a position to choose whether to have sex or not.
