Sunday trams to run after midnight

SUNDAY SERVICE FROM CITY TO BE EXTENDED IN BID TO IMPROVE TRAVEL FOR PASSENGERS

- By KATIE BUTLER

THE LAST tram home will leave Manchester city centre after midnight on Sundays - an hour later than the current service.

Transport bosses have also promised better connections from Manchester Airport, additional platforms and carriages in a bid to improve tram travel for passengers.

The changes, which come into force on January 28, will mean you can stay out later on a Sunday night and still get the tram home. At the moment the last Sunday tram services terminate just after 11pm.

On Saturdays tram services terminate just before 1am and on weekdays run until just before midnight.

As part of a raft of improvements the Manchester Airport line services are also going to be running to Victoria, instead of ending at Deansgate-Castlefield.

Services from MediaCityUK will now run to Etihad Campus, whereas it was only previously to Piccadilly.

Altrincham services that previously ran to Etihad Campus will terminate at Piccadilly. Additional platforms at Altrincham and Victoria stops will also be brought in when the changes are introduced.

The additional trams introduced on the Altrincham and Bury lines before Christmas will continue to operate, providing additional capacity at peak times on the network’s two busiest lines. Trams will continue to run every six or 12 minutes as they currently do.

Airport ‘early bird’ services which run from 3am–6am Monday to Saturday and 3am–7am Sunday will continue to terminate at DeansgateCastlefield.

Coun Andrew Fender, Chair of the Transport for Greater Manchester Committee, said: “More and more people continue to travel on Metrolink and this is a really important service pattern change that is focused on delivering improvements for our customers.

“Metrolink connects large parts of the city region, providing vital links across our towns and cities and the introduction of later running trams on Sundays will be a boost to our night time economy and the workers and revellers who support it.

“This, coupled with the fact that we’re extending services from the airport to Victoria – which will provide better connections and additional capacity through the regional centre – will undoubtedly improve our customers’ journey and experience of Metrolink.”
