Lowe keeps his cool as Bury end losing run

- FOOTBALL By SHELDAN KEAY @MENSports

RYAN Lowe insists his Bury side need to be realistic despite ending their run of eight consecutive defeats with a 2-1 victory at Oxford United.

Late goals from George Miller and Harry Bunn earned the Shakers the victory after James Henry had earlier given Oxford the lead.

It was Lowe’s first win as Bury boss since taking over from Chris Lucketti following his sacking last week, but he says there is still a lot of work to do.

“We had 19 games to do something and that meant winning games and believing we were going to win games,” said Lowe.

“It’s a great feeling but we have to be realistic about the situation we’re in. We stressed we must believe we can go on and win, and we did believe that.

“We were solid from back to front. The shape was outstanding. It was a great all-round team performance. I’ve got a tight group, showing great togetherness.”

Despite the win, Bury remain bottom of the League One table, 11 points adrift from safety.

OLDHAM ATHLETIC boss Richie Wellens has once again stressed his side are in desperate need of a striker after they dropped into the relegation zone following a 3-0 defeat at Peterborough United.

Junior Morais, George Cooper and Jack Marriott scored for Peterborough, while George Edmundson was also sent off for the visitors. It means they have dropped to 22nd placed and are now two points from safety, and Wellens knows they need a goalscorer.

“We need a striker desperately, a good striker at this level who can score goals and can pull off shoulders,” he said.

“Sometimes in and around the box we over play. If we had a selfish striker then they would shoot.

“It’s so frustrating because how is that game 3-0? They are in and around the play-offs and we are in and around the relegation places, and you look at the sides before the sending off and we are the better team.

ROCHDALE were set to host Southend United at the Crown Oil Arena, but the game was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

WIGAN ATHLETIC are now five points clear at the top of the table after a comfortable 3-1 win against Plymouth Argyle at Home Park.

Plymouth went ahead through a Graham Carey penalty, but goals from Will Grigg, Gavin Masey and Dan Burn helped Wigan turn things around and pick up all three points.

In the Championship, BOLTON WANDERERS remain one point above the relegation zone after a 1-1 draw at home to Ipswich Town.

Gary Madine had given Bolton the lead just after half-time, but they were denied the win when Joe Garner equalised late on.
