Woman caught dumping rubbish behind her house
£685 BILL FOR FLY-TIPPER WHO DROPPED BAGS OVER WALL INTO GINNEL
THIS is the moment a woman was caught dumping bags of waste in a ginnel behind her house.
Rahimo Mahamud, 50, was taken to court and fined more than £500 after a member of the public took photographs of her fly-tipping on Kippax Street, Moss Side. They then reported the incident to Manchester council in June last year.
An investigation was launched, but Mahamud failed to respond to opportunities for interviews, the council said. She admitted flytipping at Manchester magistrates court last month, and was fined £560 with court costs of £125.
Council bosses said fly-tipping ‘causes real and justifiable anger in our communities’ and urged others to come forward with information.
In another case, a rogue waste collector was hit with a bill of more than £600 after a fridge, carpet and bin bags full of rubbish were dumped in south Manchester.
William O’Donnell, of Stockport Road, Cheadle, Stockport, lent his van to an associate knowing it would be used for fly-tipping.
Manchester council officers discovered the fridge, filled with 10 bin bags and a carpet placed on top, on waste land on Willenhall Road, Northenden, in January last year.
An investigation was launched and officers traced the owner of the items. He told investigators he paid cash to a ‘man with a van’ to dispose of the waste and gave them the registration of the vehicle.
Investigators traced O’Donnell as the owner of the vehicle and he admitted he knowingly allowed his van to be used for fly-tipping.
He also admitted he knew his associate did not own a licence to transport and dispose of waste.
O’Donnell, 54, was fined £140, plus £450 costs and a victim surcharge of £30, adding up to £620, following a hearing at Manchester magistrates court last week.
Coun Nigel Murphy, Manchester council’s executive member for neighbourhoods, said: “These cases show that by working together, we can catch and punish unscrupulous fly-tippers. It causes real and justifiable anger in our communities when waste is illegally dumped and so we welcome any information from our residents that helps us to track down those responsible.”
