‘Give cash to council and not to charities’

-

AT long last a government minister is looking into which charities they should financially support with taxpayers’ money after the Oxfam scandal.

Good charities will always survive and should be subsidised. But for far too long charities have been allowed to pop up all over the place without being scrutinised.

My son is disabled and I has been in the disabled world for the last 26 years, and in all that time the only organisation that has been there for my son is Manchester City Council, who have given people like my son everything you would expect a charity to do.

My son has three disabilities and in the last 26 years the only thing a charity has ever given him is a leaflet. Some of the bigger charities like Oxfam are sitting on hundreds of millions, and will continue to build on that treasure chest for the life of the charity without being monitored.

The Charities Commission should also be looked into and a moratorium should now be put in place on charity funding, home and aboard until all charities reapply for funding and charitable status showing they have safeguarding policies in place, and show they are actually spending the taxpayers money and not hording it in the bank. If you want my honest opinion, after dealing with charities over the last 26 years, I would say the next time MCC put up the community charge, please just think about all they do for disabled people behind the scenes.

And the next time someone rattles a charity can at you, ask them to send the money to Manchester City Council who have always done more for disabled people than charity has ever done. Trevor Mooney, Abbey Hey
