Attempted murder: Man, boy arrested

- By HELEN JOHNSON

A TEENAGE boy and a man have been arrested after the attempted murder of a 17-year-old in Wythenshawe.

The boy was walking along Oatlands Road when he was attacked by a group of people on Wednesday night.

He was left fighting for his life after being hit over the head with a baseball bat.

The boy was given first aid by staff at a nearby taxi firm before paramedics rushed him to hospital, where he remains in a serious condition.

Police have arrested a 20-yearold man and a 16-year-old boy on suspicion of attempted murder.

Detective Chief Inspector Alan Clitherow, of GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “Following this brutal attack on a 17-year-old boy a team of detectives set about finding those responsible. We have made two arrests.

“Our investigation is still continuing, however, and the team are working tirelessly to find out what exactly lead to this 17-year-old boy fighting for his life.”

Police were called to the scene just before 9pm to reports of an assault. The teenager was taken to hospital suffering from a serious head injury.

Staff from a taxi firm later told the M.E.N. how they tried to save the boy’s life following the attack, which took place close to their office.

Gary Bethan, 56, general manager of Club Cars, said: “One of our staff went out and helped the young lad as best they could until the police and ambulance service arrived and we have been helping police with their enquiries.

“She [the staff member] did first aid and did very well.

“It is frightening and a worry to see this happening with young kids. Wythenshawe been going up and is a nice area, so it is a shock to see this happening.

“It is random, you can never know what is round the corner.

“We will tell our drivers to be vigilant and keep an eye out. It was a serious assault and you wouldn’t want this happening to anyone. We just wish the boy all the best.”

Anybody with information is asked to call police on 101, quoting incident number 1928.
