Police appeal after racial abuse

INCIDENT WAS IN FIRST CLASS ON TRAIN TO NEWCASTLE

POLICE have issued a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak with after a passenger was racially abused on board a train. The 20-year-old victim was travelling in the first class carriage of a First Transpenni­ne Express service to Newcastle from Manchester Piccadilly on Sunday, December 10.

The train left Manchester Piccadilly at 9.20pm. Officers say that a man started making racist comments, was behaving aggressive­ly and was shouting and swearing. The incident took place in the first class carriage of the service.

British Transport Police have launched an investigat­ion and have now released an image of a man they want to speak to in connection with the incident. A BTP spokesman added: “We received a report that a man was verbally abusing a passenger on a train from Manchester Piccadilly. The incident happened on December 10 in the first class carriage of the 9.22pm Trans Pennine service to Newcastle from Manchester Piccadilly.

“A man made racist comments, was aggressive and swearing and shouting.

“The victim, a 20-year-old man, was verbally and racially abused. We are appealing for informatio­n and would like to speak to the man shown in the CCTV image as he may have informatio­n which could help the investigat­ion.”

Anyone with further informatio­n can text police on 61016 using reference number 421 of December 10.
