Blues hit with FA Cup charge

CITY ALSO CONSIDERING POLICE COMPLAINT OVER AGUERO CONFRONTATION

- By STUART BRENNAN

CITY and Wigan have both been charged with failing to control their players for the angry scenes following Fabian Delph’s red card in Monday night’s FA Cup tie.

But neither Sergio Aguero nor Pep Guardiola will face any action for heated scenes at half-time and full-time of the game, which the Latics won 1-0.

An FA statement said: “Both Wigan Athletic and Manchester City have been charged for failing to control their players in relation to the dismissal of Fabian Delph during last night’s Emirates FA Cup fifth round tie.

“The clubs have until 6pm on Friday, February 23, 2018, to respond.”

Both clubs have also been asked for their observations over the crowd trouble which marred the end of the game, with City unhappy at security arrangements for the fifth round tie.

Aguero has been cleared of wrongdoing after he was confronted by a fan, and both men raised their arms in an angry argument, but it is understood the Argentina international has been reminded of his responsibilities.

City are now understood to be considering a police complaint after Aguero told them that the fan confronted him and spat in his ear.

Wigan defender Chey Dunkley, who had been chatting to Aguero as they walked off the pitch – and is believed to have been asking for a shirt swap – intervened, keeping Aguero apart from the fan, until City backroom staff hustled him away.

New video footage has shown that as hundreds of jubilant Wigan fans ran onto the pitch to celebrate a historic win, some made a beeline for disappointed City players.

One can be seen running behind Aguero and taking a swipe towards the back of his head, which did not seem to connect. Two more dash up and get selfies with the player, who again does not react.

But then a fan runs straight up to Aguero, who suddenly reacts with anger.

Most fans simply celebrated their win in the centre of the pitch, but a sizeable number made their way to the away end, and began taunting the 4,000 travelling City support. That led to missiles being thrown.
