Temperatures to plummet to -12C
FORECASTERS say wind chill in parts of Greater Manchester could make it feel like -12C later this week.
Experts say the region is in the for its coldest weather since 2013.
Temperatures are likely to hover at around freezing and below all through the week.
Met office experts say wind chill will make it feel even colder.
By Thursday, forecasters warn, it could feel as cold as -12C.
Met Office spokeswoman Nicola Maxey said: “This is probably the coldest spell since 2013 – it’s a quite exceptional spell of cold weather.
“There are both amber and yellow warnings in the Greater Manchester area and we are keeping an eye on the east as this could change.
“We would normally expect weather systems to come from the west, so this is unusual.
“People should be thinking about checking on elderly neighbours and on people with long-term health issues.”
Dubbed the ‘Beast from the East’, the weather dip is a result of cold air coming in from the east.
It began a few weeks ago with the warming of the atmosphere above the polar ice caps.
This caused the jet stream to change direction, allowing cold air to come in from the east across Russia, pushing cold dry air across the country.
