POP icon Rick Astley put a smile on a few faces when he visited a support centre for people with cancer.

The ‘80s heart-throb visited Maggie’s Centre at The Christie in Withington, where he was recently made the first ever honorary ambassador.

The ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’ star hugged staff and patients when he stopped by for a brew and a chat on Wednesday, ahead of his performance at their annual fundraising Runway show in June.

Rick, who has been a hit with the ladies ever since he rose to fame in the late ‘80s, first visited Maggie’s in 2016 before the release of his comeback album 50.

After his latest visit, Rick told the M.E.N.: “It’s an amazing place, full of super-positive energy. From the foundations to the roof, there‘s something going on that’s really special.”

Margo Cornish, Manchester board member of Maggie’s, said: “Rick is one of the most down to earth and self-effacing people I have met.

“We are thrilled to have the support of himself and his lovely wife, Lene Bausager, here at Maggie’s Manchester.”

Maggie’s on the Runway fashion show will be held on Saturday, June 16, at the Runway Visitor Centre at Manchester Airport.

The gala event will be followed by an evening gala ball where Rick and his band will headline.

Maggie’s provides practical and emotional support to people living with cancer and their loved ones.
