IF you’ve ever stared longingly into the depths of a reservoir and felt a burning desire to have one of your very own, now could be your chance.
Dean Mills Reservoir in Bolton has gone up for sale – and it could be yours from as little as £10,000.
Whoever snaps it up could have the chance to create their own little ‘oasis’ high on the moors above Barrow Bridge village.
The seven-acre site includes 5.5 acres of water and comes with 1.5 acres of surrounding moorland – as well as incredible views.
You can’t drive straight up to it though, as the site, which is three miles from Bolton town centre, is only accessible by a footpath. It is unclear what the site’s eventual owner would be able to do with their purchase, but the property details state that it is ‘considered suitable for a variety of uses, subject to the necessary consents being obtained.’
As part of the West Pennine Moors, however, it is protected from any sort of large development and is expected to be sold to a buyer who will use it for leisure purposes.
Stuart Cooper, director of Auction House North West which is handling the sale, says there has already been plenty of interest in the plot, including from private fisheries and people who just want a quiet spot to get away from it all.
He said: “It’s an interesting one. I don’t know what people will do with it, but some sort of leisure. It’s a nice spot.
“They could have it as a lake or as their own oasis.
“It could appeal to people who want to get away from it all or have their own boat. It’s off the beaten track.
“The views are amazing if you get the weather.”
The reservoir is thought to date back to the 19th century, when it was used by mill owners in the production process.
Parts of old an pulley system still exists at the side of the water.
The unusual lot will be sold at auction by Auction House North West on Tuesday, March 20, at the Macron stadium.
