SCHOOLCHILDREN who tried to steal bikes by kicking cyclists off were chased through Chorlton by police.

Now officers are calling on bosses at two local schools to step in because ‘the volume of incidents that their pupils are creating is not acceptable.’

A large group of youngsters, around 10-15, were spotted kicking passing cyclists and trying to steal their bikes while on Barlow Moor Road on Thursday.

When police arrived at the scene they had to chase the group through Chorlton Park where two people were then detained.

One person was arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and possession of a bladed article.

Officers believe the suspect may also be responsible for more thefts.

It is not yet known how many people were targeted by the group.

Nobody is believed to have been injured during the incident.

Officers gave details about the incident on the GMP Chorlton and Didsbury Facebook page.

They wrote: “There was an attempt robbery by a group of youths on Barlow Moor Road in Chorlton where 10-15 males have been kicking at passing cyclists, trying to steal their bikes.

“Four officers have attended and have chased the group through Chorlton Park where two have been detained.

“One has now been arrested on suspicion of attempt robbery and possession of a bladed article and may have been confirmed as responsible for more incidents involving thefts. The neighbourhood team have picked up on this and will be liaising with the two local schools for their assistance as the volume of incidents that their pupils are creating is not acceptable.”

They added: “There has to be a concerted and coordinated approach to tackling these issues, otherwise they don’t usually get solved, especially given current resourcing levels.

“I also find it tends to prevent further issues before they arise, if done properly.”

Anyone with information about anti-social behaviour in the suburb should report it to police on 101 or 999 in an emergency.
