City streets on lockdown over suspected bomb

-

A STREET in Salford was put on a police lockdown after a suspected World War Two bomb was discovered on a building site.

A bomb disposal unit was scrambled to the construction site by Clowes Street and Chapel Street, in Ordsall, at 3.50pm yesterday.

The surrounding area, including the streets near to The Lowry Hotel, were sealed off while experts assessed the large ‘cylindrical’ object.

It was said to resemble a World War Two bomb, however, police later confirmed it was not an explosive device.

The item was removed from the site by police for further assessment.

A GMP spokesman said: “A large cylindrical object which resembled a World War Two bomb was found on the site.

“Our colleagues from the bomb disposal unit attended and assessed the item.

“They confirmed it was not a bomb. There is no danger to the public and the cordon has been lifted.”

The 100m cordon around the building site caused major disruption for commuters around the Chapel Street area.

Residents of The Edge apartments were told they could not enter the building until it had been confirmed it was safe to do so.

However, the incident had little impact on The Lowry Hotel, which carried on ‘business as usual’.

The streets surrounding the five-star hotel were closed but guests were allowed to come and go as normal via Trinity Bridge.
