McAlpine drafted in to complete apartments

- By STUART GREER

DEVELOPERS have drafted in a replacement for a major project on the edge of the city centre following the Carillion collapse.

Select Property Group has brought in Sir Robert McAlpine to complete its £150m Affinity Living apartments scheme on New Bailey Street, Salford.

The riverside scheme, which includes 37 and 17-storey buildings, was given planning permission in July 2016 and Carillion was working on the project until it went bust in January.

Following months of uncertainty regarding Carillion, a contract has been signed with Sir Robert McAlpine. Riverside was originally scheduled for completion at the end of 2018, while Riverview was scheduled to complete in 2019.

The immediate priority is to formalise all programme timings.

When complete, Affinity Living will comprise 505 apartments, as well as shared lounge areas, coworking spaces, ‘supersized’ gyms and private entertaining spaces.

Mark Oakes, chief commercial officer at Select, said: “Thanks to the proactive approach of our team we have been able to expedite what can ordinarily be a lengthy process.

“We are delighted to have the Sir Robert McAlpine team on board to complete the scheme and we look forward to updating the industry in the coming months.”

The development is located on New Bailey Street next to the riverside footpath that links Spinningfields to Blackfriars Street.

Simon Trevor, Sir Robert McAlpine’s managing director for Central, Wales and the West, added: “The Riverside and Riverview schemes are significant projects in Manchester and it’s a pleasure to be starting work with the Select Property Group team.” The Affinity Living scheme is part of a £750m development called Circle Square which aims to reshape Manchester’s cultural and business scene.

The scheme is a joint venture partnership between Select Property Group and Bruntwood.

This connected space at the heart of Corridor Manchester will be surrounded by world leading centres of knowledge, science and technology, business, art, music and dance.
