Plans for 177 homes in Mossley
PLANS have been unveiled for a huge new estate with 177 ‘executive’ homes.
The major new residential development is earmarked for a site next to Mossley Hollins High School.
The applicant wants to build mainly detached four-bedroom homes to meet a shortage of so-called ‘executive’ properties in the area, on land off Huddersfield Road. They say the houses, which they want to build next to green belt land would be in ‘high demand.’ None of the properties are expected to be ‘affordable’ homes.
The application’s agent argues the development is needed to help meet the borough’s five-year housing supply target.
But Mossley ward councillor Jack Homer wants more social housing to prevent Tameside residents being ‘priced out’ of their own area.
He said: “We need to have a conversation about the impact it’s going to have on surrounding areas regarding flooding and the impact it could have on services in the town, and doctors surgeries.
“But the biggest issue for me are the sort of houses being built. There is not enough social housing in the town.
“Very few of the people who will buy these houses actually live in Tameside or Mossley, what’s eventually going to happen is that people in this area are going to be priced out.
“You need to be building houses for the people who actually live here, the people who want to move out of rented accommodation or their parent’s homes.”
During a public consultation, Mossley residents expressed concerns over traffic problems and flooding on Huddersfield Road, near to Hey Farm.
The application agent Cordingleys said there were a number of residents in favour of the plans, and they received ‘positive feedback.’
A decision on whether to grant outline planning approval is expected by May.
If successful, the land would be sold by the applicant - who is listed as the trustees of ‘Mrs E Bissill’s Marriage Settlement Reversionary’ to a developer.
