Rojo’s delight over new Reds contract

- By CIARAN KELLY

MARCOS Rojo has signed a new threeyear contract with the option of a further season.

The Argentine has made 105 appearances for the Reds since joining from Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2014 and has won four trophies in his time at Old Trafford.

Rojo has had his issues with injuries in the last year or so, tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in April, but has proven himself as one of Jose Mourinho’s favourite players.

With his original contract expiring next year, Rojo has now put pen to paper on an extension that could keep him at the club until June 2022, if United take up the option of the extra year.

“Since I joined Manchester United, it has been everything I thought it would be and more,” said Rojo. “I am extremely happy to extend my stay at this great club. When I joined, my aim was to help the team win trophies and we have done that over the past couple of seasons. I am working hard to get back on the pitch.”

Rojo made his return from that season-ending knee injury in November and put in a remarkable performance at the back against Basel.

The 27-year-old has not played for six weeks because of injury, but Mourinho has revealed he is nearing a return.

“Marcos is working hard to return to full fitness. He is always ready to put his body on the line for this club and I am delighted he has signed a new contract,” said the Reds boss.
