COMEDIAN Peter Kay delighted fans by making a surprise appearance on stage at the sell-out screening of the last two episodes of his BBC sitcom Car Share.

The 44-year-old comedian recently announced there would be three charity screenings of his popular BBC comedy programme at the Blackpool Opera House.

The star’s surprise appearance at the end of the first half of the final screening stunned the audience. The crowd erupted into clapping and cheers with some in the audience even giving him a standing ovation.

According to one fan, a couple of audience members even ran to the front of the stage to tell him they love him.

In December, the comic cancelled his UK tour due to ‘unforeseen circumstances.’ It was to be his first live tour in eight years and had sold out 22 nights at Manchester Arena across 2018 and 2019.

He also cancelled any other upcoming live commitments.

In a statement at the time, Kay said: “My sincerest apologies. The decision has not been taken lightly and I’m sure you’ll understand my family must always come first.

“I’ve always endeavoured to protect my family’s privacy from the media. I hope that the media and the public will continue to respect our privacy at this time.”

Fan Kate Atkinson, who attended all three of the screenings, said: “I was just pleased to see him there. It was extra special tonight that he introduced the second half. He just said thanks for coming, thanks for supporting the charity and then specifically mentioned parts of the finale that we were not to post online.”

“To everyone who shouted ‘I love you’ he responded in kind. It was difficult to hear everything as the cheering was so loud.”

The screenings were to raise money for the Lily Foundation, which treats children with mitochondrial disease.

All three of the screenings aired a special finale to the series as well as an entirely improvised episode.

One fan described the finale as a ‘perfect final episode.’
