Skipper says City should have closed derby out

VINCENT Kompany believes City should have been ‘more cautious’ after United came from behind to spoil their Premier League title party.

The City skipper headed in a brilliant opener to set City on their way, with Ilkay Gundogan doubling the lead before the break.

However, title celebrations were postponed as Paul Pogba bagged a brace and Chris Smalling fired in the winner for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Kompany was reluctant to blame the Blues’ busy fixture schedule as a contributing factor in the defeat.

“You know probably the second half you can look at a team which has had seven days to prepare and we’ve had a three-day turnaround, so no complaints there,” Kompany told Sky Sports.

“But maybe that’s what went wrong for us in the second-half. That’s why we should have either buried the game in the first-half or maybe realised we had to be a little bit more cautious in the second half. Whichever way, but fair play to them.

“No blame to anyone but the reality of this game is we should have buried it.

“It would have been special for the fans but, okay, we’re still in a good position to get over the line as first and that still remains the main ambition.

“The only thing which matters is who gets over the finish line first, we’ve missed an opportunity but this game was a good game like most games we’ve played this season.”
