New wind power will bring end of fracking
WITH all today’s big news: Boris and Brexit, chemical attacks in Syria and Salisbury, data leaks, stabbings and scandals aplenty it’s easy to overlook old and good news themes.
So I was cheered to read of the recent expansion of wind-generated electricity in Scotland (Wind power boost, M.E.N. April 9).
Not only does this protect our children’s environment, it pushes down prices to consumers and underlines the short-sightedness of investing in new fossil fuel extraction such as the ongoing push to frack in Fylde – now threatening Roseacre Wood North of Preston.
Residents there not only fear for their environment and house values, with no pavements and 500 HGVs a day on their country lanes, they fear for their lives.
Banks, venture capitalists and pension funds stand to lose fortunes when the bottom drops out of this market, leaving them with assets which are liabilities they cannot realise. Even the World Bank is getting out of oil and gas extraction.
Nevertheless, the struggle continues and Frack Free Greater Manchester are organising a coach on Monday (April 16) to the ongoing demonstration on Preston New Road. This is all very sad, especially when, as your news item points out, our need of fracking is rapidly diminishing and it is becoming obsolete as well as destructive. Ieuan Ap-Don, Salford
