TEMPERATURES are set to soar in Manchester next week making it warmer than the Costa del Sol.

The role reversal is due to last for several days as the wet and windy weather normally destined for the UK heads towards the Mediterranean instead.

This means it will be colder than normal in Spain and Portugal, while temperatures in Greater Manchester are expected to hit the 20C mark by midweek.

But before the sunny spells reach the region we will have to endure heavy rainshowers and strong winds this weekend.

Today, forecasters say to expect low cloud, showery rain and temperatures reaching highs of 14C.

There will be some periods of sunny spells and outbreaks of heavy showers tomorrow, while on Sunday there could be stronger winds. But the weather conditions are expected to improve on Monday, with temperatures expected to reach 17C. By Wednesday temperatures are expected to reach highs of 20C, while there will be long spells of sunshine and dry conditions. A spokesman for The Weather Channel said: “High pressure is expected to become strongly dominant over Europe, reaching maximum effect with mostly sunny and dry weather and gentle winds with well above normal temperatures by next Wednesday.”

Grahame Madge, spokesman for the Met Office, said: “At the moment we have this Easterly flow which is bringing rain, low cloud and fog. However, there is quite an evolution of events that are taking place.

“There will be rain in the north west over the weekend, most likely on Sunday. By Monday there is the prospect of bright condition coming up from the south and extending to Scotland.

“At the moment we are looking at it being in the low 20s. Conditions will be quite bright and dry. For the north west it looks like it will be warm from Monday onwards. There is the potential for rain showers on Saturday. On Sunday it looks like it will be bright and dry, there will be some rain.

“On Monday and Tuesday this area of low pressure, rain will likely be going to the far west in Ireland and beyond, that creates the dry and bright conditions.”
