OLDHAM Athletic’s Academy manager has been suspended from the club.

Tony Philliskirk, who runs the under 18s team, has stopped working ‘with immediate effect’, pending an investigation by Latics bosses. No further details of the suspension have been made public.

The FA have been made aware of the ongoing inquiry.

Yesterday, Oldham Athletic posted on their website: “Academy Manager Tony Philliskirk has been suspended with immediate effect, pending the outcome of a club investigation.

“The club will be making no further comment on the matter.”

Mr Philliskirk, 53, has worked at the club for 20 years, starting his career at Oldham Athletic in 1998 as a youth coach and twice caretaker manager.

He was highly regarded as a professional footballer, playing for 11 different clubs.

His career began as an 18-year-old with Sheffield United, for whom he played 80 times and scored 20 goals from 1983-88.

He later played for Oldham Athletic, and Preston North End, before spending three years at Bolton Wanderers where he scored 51 goals in 141 games from 1989-92.

Mr Philliskirk later joined Peterborough and Burnley where he went out on loan to several clubs, before joining Oldham in 1998 where he has been a youth coach and twice caretaker manager.

He has also been well respected at Oldham as a coach, bringing young talent through the ranks.

Mr Philliskirk was contacted for comment about his suspension.
